Mother's Day was last Sunday, in case you missed it. This is one biggest days for retailers Selling flowers & chocolates. (maybe Valentines just pips it)

Did you miss out, Mother's Day Retail bonanza?

The problem is how do you keep the flowers fresh & the chocolates looking & tasting so good. You know this is going to be a busy day. You been to the Flemington Market you have truckloads of flowers. How are you going to keep all these flowers fresh, so they look spectacular when mum gets them? Of course, your customers want these flowers to last. So Mom can cherish those special memories you just stirred up. The aromatic Bunches of Flowers and Bouquets encompass your Florist shop. You try to anticpate the demand on this special day. You would hate to run out of flowers. Isn't That Right? The only thing worse than running out of flowers. Would be trying to offload wilted flowers because they were not stored properly. You know if you can keep the flowers cool they have a better chance of thriving for your customers. Years of experience have taught you. Keeping your flowers cold, slows down the respiration process. So blossoms slip into a sleep-like state. When these flowers awake, they have a vase life like that of freshly cut flowers. Every degree above this range robs your flowers of precious vase life. Increasing the respiration rate. It's even worse for Tropical flowers.

Can you put flowers in any fridge?

Even the NSW Govt Dept Primary Industries mentions on their website. Postharvest care of cut flowers. “To ensure a good vase life, you need to cool flowers rapidly after picking — this is called removing the field heat. You must then store them at low temperatures. For most flowers, a suitable storage temperature is between 1°C and 4°C.!” Bettina Gollnow, Neil Wade. //www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/content/agriculture/horticulture/floriculture/post-harvest/care You could put your flowers in Fridge. I know you're probably thinkng what about my drinks fridge. It keeps my drinks cold and it's not alway full. If you put them in Normal drinks display fridge it's designed to stay dry. Because you don't want all those cardboard boxes and carrying cases to get soggy and fall apart. Using a refrigerator with a set temperature range, such as a beverage Fridge, it's not suitable for flowers... Your florist refrigerator could be your most important tool you have for extending the life of your cut flowers. It’s worth your investment of time and money to get the right Flower Fridge

Temperature is so important because it affects everything else in the life of a flower:

Water loss... Flower opening... Stem bending... Petal wilting... Flower fall... The possibility of botrytis infection... How cut flowers and plants respond to ethylene...and more... This why you need a refrigerator designed for a Florist. It's not just the temperature you need to Keep your flowers fresh. To store flowers & keep them longer & fresher you need 2 other ingredients Humidity and air flow.

Flowers need Cool and Humidity

In a well-designed floral fridge engineered to balance temperature and humidity. Flowers need high humidity, they also need gentle airflow (a fast breeze can dry them out, even in the cold).

5 Reasons Why a Florist Refrigerator needs to have Humidity control...

Fridges without humidifiers will dehydrate your flowers shortening their life... The relative humidity in the floral fridge should be no lower than 80%, and ideally, should be 90 to 95%... Humidity is important to flowers because it reduces the rate at which a cut flower or green gives off moisture to the air... With low temperatures and high relative humidity, a cut flower takes up less water from the container because it is losing less water to the surrounding air... Keeping valuable flowers fresh for as long as possible requires the right temperature, as well as humidity. Flower storage ranges from 1-8°c , with common types around 2°c and more exotics around 8°c... Postharvest care expert W. Kurt Schroeder recommends “1.11-2.22 degrees C. Flowers don't freeze at 0 degrees C. They freeze at about -1.66 degrees, so there is no risk of freezing at these temperatures!” Postharvest care expert W. Kurt Schroeder AIFD, AAF, PFCI, of South Jersey Floral Company in Deptford, New Jersey With flowers, it also relies a lot on the humidity levels within the cabinets to keep flowers hydrated.
